Answer
First, you need some inspiration. And to begin, you need to first pick out some bedding. A comforter you love will have a color pallet you can work with for paint and other accessories. Do not select a random paint color because you will drive yourself nuts trying to find bedding to match, so buy the bedding first.
Select two colors from the bedding. Paint the brightest color on the wall behind your bed. Then, a lighter version of that color or a lighter second color on the rest of the walls.
Go easy on the second wall color and use accessories to add more color and style to your room. Spray paint can transform any object. You can spray paint a lamp, a waste paper basket, your light switches and wall outlet covers, picture frames and what not. Reuse whatever you can by changing it. You can spray paint the handles on your furniture or paint your furniture for a totally new look.
Your room is small, so you need to use the space wisely. Can you fit a dresser in your closet? Don't use a bookshelf, instead, hang shelves on the walls and get canvas, metal or wicker baskets to store your stuff in. Get one of those over the door shoe holders that are made of clear plastic and store your hair accessories, jewelry, makeup, cell phone charger, Ipod, hair products, and other stuff in there so you can see it all and have it tidy to keep your furniture clear of clutter. Keep as much of the floor space clear as possible and your room will look and feel bigger.
Clean out your closet and get rid of anything you have not worn in the past year and that goes for all of your drawers, too. You will see that you have a lot more space to store the things you use. Anything you are not using (old papers, things you want to keep but are not using, mementos and such) you should pack up and store in the attic, basement or garage. You need the space so get that stuff you do not need or use out of your room.
Under the bed storage is great, use it wisely. Maybe for pull out shoe storage? Or perhaps craft items?
Make a bulletin board. Buy some ribbon and tacks to make a trellis criss cross pattern to hold your notes and photos of your friends. Get pretty shoe box size photo storage containers with lids and store your CD's in alphabetical order. Get organized.
Hang sheer curtains so the light shines through and get an inexpensive roller shade to use when you want privacy. You could glue some beaded trim to the bottom of the shade. Buy some fluffy decorative pillows for your bed, too.
But, it all starts with the bedding, so go shopping for a comforter that you love. Try Overstock.com for some nice bedding and shipping is under three dollars.
