I have a rather large space (17x17 ft) with a vaulted ceiling that angles up and creates a plant shelf above the door to the master bath. I would like some suggestions on what to do with this shelf area. It is about 12 ft long and 4 ft deep and is about 9 ft from the floor and is 5 ft tall. I would say that our style is "transitional" not too contemporary and not too traditional. Also I am having trouble with the color scheme. Our furniture is dark cherry, our bedding is khaki and creme striped and the carpet is beige. The walls are currently khaki and all of the neutrals are starting to get to me!! I would like to add some color but with such large walls I am afraid of being overwhelmed. Any help is greatly appreciated!!

Thanks!

i would probably fill the space above the door with a sculpture of some sort (try pier one or bombay company). i think that maybe some light grayish tones with hints of blue would look very nice on your walls to complement the contemporary side. otherwise you should go your local paint store and pick up some paint swatches or even some sample colors that you can actually paint on your wall to try.
this website provides some beautiful colors and ideas. for your situation i would suggest checking out the urban loft, whitewash and thoroughbred colors.

I need examples for decorating my new place!?

Are there some websites where I can see predesigned rooms, like show rooms or model rooms! I really cant stand to trust myself anymore! I cant match or mix match properly! My place is a two bedroom with living room, dining room, den and a kitchen, has two bathrooms with outside vanities and has two levels. The bottom level is mainly for my work while the small upstairs is just for me! Can yall and any ideas are great!!! Thanks

HGTV is a great resource. There are is a library of rooms and you can browse on-line (dining room, bedroom, kitchen, bathroom, office etc) by style (contemporary, modern, traditional, eclectic etc). It's great fun. I like to browse to get ideas for color combinations... and general styles. You can take ideas from a number of rooms and combine them into your own.

Another source is the library.. there are a variety of decorating books with tons of photos. Magazines like Better Homes and Gardens and Home Beautiful usually have a lot of photos. Also, I get many ideas from catalogs like Pottery Barn and Crate & Barrel. You can request catalogs on their websites. Again, they are more of a resource for inspiration for style & color combinations. If you see a room you love - identify the elements that speak to you and 'plagerize' away. One of the most important things if you paint is good 'flow'. You want to avoid abrupt color changes where rooms come together. Find colors that work together. And that make you FEEL good. Color definitely affects your mood (chromatherapy) so when you find a color you like take notice of how it makes you feel. (This applies to being in real life spaces.. moreso that photos). There are many trendy diners, bookstores, cafes, spas and boutiques decorated in modern colors/styles so take notice of decor when you are out and about.

Above all - have fun! By all means don't be so hard on yourself about your choices!!! Maybe your tastes have changed over time a bit or maybe you've had a lot of hand-me-downs and never really developed your style. Whatever the case if you look for items that you love you will enjoy being in your home... and your home will be a reflection of you. And by all means don't be afraid to get rid of (donate) things that 'don't work' any longer... Good luck and post your photos out in HGTV when you're done :)
