and how much is a decent price?

Answer
A "beginner" bass is like a "beginner" piano - there's no such thing. A beginner can learn just as easily on an expensive boutique instrument and a maestro can conjure beautiful music out of a crappy cheap thing. What "beginner" usually means is "cheap, because I'm not sure if I'm really committing to this."

As with any instrument, the best thing to do is to go to your local music store and try some out, and pick the one you like the sound, look, and feel of best. Keeping it cheap with your first instrument is a good idea, because only after you've been playing a while will you really know what you want from your dream bass - active or passive electronics, slim or chunky neck, bolt-on or neck-through, etc. etc.

The absolute cheapest basses that are still worth playing are the SX basses from www.rondomusic.com. They're not available in stores, but rondo's pretty generous about returns. The cheapest model starts at $110+shipping. Some are lemons, and taking it into a shop for good strings and a setup (which will run you another $20-30) is recommended.

Of the more traditional brands, Ibanez and Squier each have decent basses. I'd stay away from starter packs with the Ibanez "Gio" basses or Squier's "Affinity" series. May as well get an SX as one of those and save money. But if you get an Ibanez soundgear 200 or, better, 300 series (SR200, SR300) or a Vintage Modified Squier, those are good baseline instruments. They'll run you around $300. Yamahas are also great, say the RBX series.

Remember you also need an amp. If you're just going to be playing in your bedroom for now, you can get a cheap 15 or 20 watt practice amp - rondo sells some for $40 or so, brand names in store will be more to the tune of $100 but a lot of the time you can find someone selling their old ones on craigslist for $25 or something. If you're going to play with a band, and be heard over a drummer, you'll need a lot more power - 100 watts for practice and probably upwards of 200 for playing in public.

Besides that, accessories - cord, strap, tuner, a gig bag if your guitar didn't come with one - will probably add up to $50-100 depending on what you get.

I need examples for decorating my new place!?

HGTV is a great resource. There are is a library of rooms and you can browse on-line (dining room, bedroom, kitchen, bathroom, office etc) by style (contemporary, modern, traditional, eclectic etc). It's great fun. I like to browse to get ideas for color combinations... and general styles. You can take ideas from a number of rooms and combine them into your own.

Another source is the library.. there are a variety of decorating books with tons of photos. Magazines like Better Homes and Gardens and Home Beautiful usually have a lot of photos. Also, I get many ideas from catalogs like Pottery Barn and Crate & Barrel. You can request catalogs on their websites. Again, they are more of a resource for inspiration for style & color combinations. If you see a room you love - identify the elements that speak to you and 'plagerize' away. One of the most important things if you paint is good 'flow'. You want to avoid abrupt color changes where rooms come together. Find colors that work together. And that make you FEEL good. Color definitely affects your mood (chromatherapy) so when you find a color you like take notice of how it makes you feel. (This applies to being in real life spaces.. moreso that photos). There are many trendy diners, bookstores, cafes, spas and boutiques decorated in modern colors/styles so take notice of decor when you are out and about.

Above all - have fun! By all means don't be so hard on yourself about your choices!!! Maybe your tastes have changed over time a bit or maybe you've had a lot of hand-me-downs and never really developed your style. Whatever the case if you look for items that you love you will enjoy being in your home... and your home will be a reflection of you. And by all means don't be afraid to get rid of (donate) things that 'don't work' any longer... Good luck and post your photos out in HGTV when you're done :)
