Gilly

I have a really pretty wrought iron bed, and I want to incorporate it into the room. The house also has a beautiful dark trim which I would like to keep, as well. I'm stuck on ideas though. I can't even decide a paint color. I'm going for romantic and eclectic.

silver, black, gray.... maybe some large power lines....some electric symbols....

I'm remodeling my bedroom, and I really want an old French, romantic kind of theme. Any ideas?

I was thinking maybe red brocade wallpaper and gilded gold mirrors--you know, something like Marie Antoinette might have in her room.

Any help is greatly appreciated! :)

Answer
The red brocade, boudiour type look, wasn't really the big thing when Marie Antoinette was Queen. That big bold look was more Louis XIV.

Seems the Marie Antoinette look would be romantic though. Here is an article about the style, called neoclassical

Also nice though is what is called "rococo"

Things were more ornate than today's traditional furniture with ribbons & bows & flowers being carved into things, and more typical of this particular period, inlaid wood. Straight, tapered legs on furniture, inlaid porcelain pieces, pieces made of beautiful wood.

Rococo, the prevalent style right before neoclassical, was also romantic with painted furniture, delicate carving of roses and bellflowers, shells, lots of swirly forms. You'll see some of the bedroom furntiure made today in this style.

They would most definitely have an ornate mirrors, pastoral scenes in fabric and paintings (like the ones in toile).

To make standard pieces like these you can try to paint them and stencil over with delicate floral motifs, or even buy the small resin or wood pieces available from hardware stores and use small nails & or heavy duty wood glue to attach them.

You could do the same to a mirror that had a frame. Or cover the frame with sea shells - very rococo. Hope this helps
